About the Temple
A sacred sanctuary of peace, wisdom, and Buddhist heritage in Sri Lanka.
Temple History
Pilana Purana Sri Maha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple with a history spanning several centuries. Believed to have been established during the Anuradhapura period, the temple has served as a spiritual refuge for countless generations of devotees. The sacred Bo tree within its grounds is said to have been planted centuries ago, and the temple has been lovingly maintained and expanded through the devotion of the surrounding community.
Spiritual Importance
The temple is a center for meditation, Dhamma study, and religious observance. The sacred Bo tree and the ancient stupa are venerated by pilgrims who come to seek blessings and inner peace. The temple provides a tranquil environment where devotees can practice mindfulness, observe sil (precepts), and deepen their understanding of the Buddha Dhamma.
Cultural Heritage
Beyond its religious significance, the temple is a guardian of Sri Lankan cultural traditions. Annual peraheras (processions), Vesak celebrations, and cultural events are held here, preserving the customs, music, and art that have been passed down through generations.
